What future first leaders and companies have in common is a profound com- mitment to two or more of these five business practices: (1) they are embracing sustainability as an innovation challenge by designing commercially suc- cessful products, production processes, and people practices, within certain environmental and social limitations; (2) they are overcoming presentism by combatting our culture's profound tendency to capture our attention in the here and now, and instead they are tuning into future trends that drive long-term value; (3) they are developing integrative thinking by creating solu- tions that synthesize the best of seemingly opposing ideas, and thereby reduce the limitations of polarized thinking; (4) they are expanding the values that drive their business decisions, by being transparent and well-reasoned about
Adopting integrative thinking
Coined by Harvard Business School Professor, Roger Martin, integrative thinking is the ability to bring together two seemingly contradictory ideas and to create something new.3 Future first leaders bring this kind of flexible thinking to their organizations.
A future first mindset requires integrative thinking to create profitable and scalable solutions to the world's biggest problems.
Integrative thinking starts with synthesizing two seemingly contradictory ideas5--like making money and having a positive material impact--through innovative products, production practices, people practices, and partnerships.
